Voting ends in the seven states that held primaries on Tuesday, as the California polls closed at 11 p.m. ET. Some high-profile incumbents, such as South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and Republican Sen. John Thune and Chuck Grassley, have rejected their main rivals, and their contenders in the general election have been determined to November.
In California, the results of many races are unlikely to arrive on Tuesday night, as the state is holding elections by mail. He is also advancing the top two voters to run in November, regardless of party affiliation, meaning some clashes could lead to two Democrats or two Republicans.
One of the Republicans in California facing a major challenge is Rep. David Valadao, one of 10 House Republicans who voted to oust former President Donald Trump. Two Republicans are challenging Valadao in the primary, former City Councilman Chris Mathys and Education Minister Adam Medeiros, but Trump has not backed any of them.
State Assembly Rudy Salas is expected to be the Democratic candidate against Valadao, if he succeeds, trying to return a seat held by a Democrat until 2020.
Democratic Representatives Katie Porter, Josh Harder and Mike Levin are on the National Republican list of targets and are waiting to see who their rival will be this November. Of the three, Levin could face the toughest race, as his district is only leaning two-point Democrat, according to data from Dave’s Redistricting App.

There are several races across the state in California, including major challenges against Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Alex Padilla, who was appointed to end the term of Vice President Kamala Harris. But there are also two high-profile local elections in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has a limited term, and MP Karen Bass and real estate developer Rick Caruso lead the contenders. A late May UC Berkeley Institute of Government Studies poll showed Bass at 38% and Caruso at 32%, but if no candidate gets 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will go to the second round. in November.
In San Francisco, progressive district attorney Chesa Boudin is facing a revocation vote, with few career polls suggesting he is in danger of losing his seat.
Meanwhile, in South Dakota, Republican Gov. Kristi Noem won the Republican nomination for governor after facing a major challenge from the right. Noem, one of the emerging stars of the Republican Party and a possible presidential candidate, focused his victory speech on President Joe Biden. He will face Democrat Jamie Smith in November, who ran unopposed on Tuesday.
Acting Senator John Thune, who is seeking his fourth term, also defeated his main rivals.
In Iowa, 88-year-old Senator Chuck Grassley has served in the Senate since 1981, surviving his main challenge from Iowa State Senator Jim Carlin.
Grassley will face Michael Franken, who defeated former US MP Abby Finkenauer. She was elected to Congress in 2018, but lost her candidacy for re-election in 2020. Finkenauer had to fight to get to the polls after a judge initially ruled she did not have enough signatures to run in the primary ballot. The Iowa Supreme Court overturned that decision several days later.
Franken helped narrow the gap with Finkenauer, who entered the race as the perceived leader, spending more on advertising. He often presented his military service as helping him appeal to independents and some more moderate Republicans.
“We’re going to work very hard. The central premise of this campaign is leadership, which is often overlooked and underestimated. That will propel us,” Franken said at a victory party Tuesday night. “It’s our turn to lead our nation to a better tomorrow.”
Republicans have set their sights on New Mexico Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. Television meteorologist Mark Ronchetti won the Republican primary against several rivals to face Lujan Grisham in November. Lujan Grisham ran without opposition to the Democratic nomination.
As the select committee of the House investigates the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol prepares for this month’s public hearings, Democratic select committee chairman Bennie Thompson won his primaries, according to Associated Press.
The primaries were also held in New Jersey. Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski, whose district was redesigned to be more pro-Republican and won 2020 by just 1 point, won its primaries. Tom Kean Jr. he won the Republican primary in the 7th district of New Jersey and will face Malinowski, the same confrontation as in 2020.
In the 2nd district of the New Jersey Congress, Trump-backed representative Jeff Van Drew, who switched parties in 2019 to vote against Trump’s ouster, won his primary. In District 8, Robert Menendez Jr., the son of longtime Sen. Robert Menendez, won the Democratic primary.
