Great news from Pittsburgh Tuesday night. According to Aditi Kinkhabwala, the Steelers are scheduled to hire Andy Weidl of the Philadelphia Eagles as GM’s assistant. Kinkhabwala also reports that the team is likely to appoint Omar Khan as the team’s next general manager, replacing Kevin Colbert.
Andy Wiedl, a Pittsburgh native and #Eagles player vice president of staff, is scheduled to be appointed new deputy general manager of #Steelers, several league sources tell me. This means that indications are that longtime Steelers executive Omar Khan is emerging as the winner of the search to replace Kevin Colbert.

Weidl and Khan were two of the six finalists for GM’s work.
Weidl began his career in Pittsburgh as an intern in 1998 and 1999. Since then, he has worked as an explorer for various organizations and most recently in Philadelphia. The Eagles have laid off their office staff, including the dismissal of Weidl’s brother Casey, which probably led Weidl to look for work elsewhere, even as a GM assistant. Weidl would be the team’s first GM assistant in team history.
Khan has been with the Steelers since 2001, primarily as the “cap type” of the team. He worked with the New Orleans Saints before being hired by the Steelers a year after Colbert’s arrival. It is unclear what will happen to Brandon Hunt, who has also been a candidate for the Steelers. Now, he doesn’t seem to be up in any charge at the front desk. He was recently interviewed for the GM assistant job at Buffalo Bills.
The Steelers have not made any official announcements, but it is said they will announce a decision later this week.
Update (21:45): Gerry Dulac of PPG reports that Omar Khan will be the team’s next GM.
