‘Reyno is the mastermind’: Departing Broncos star drops Kevvie bombshell

Broncos running back Tyson Gamble has dropped a bombshell on his way out, revealing players are turning to Adam Reynolds for guidance on coach Kevin Walters.

Gamble will leave Brisbane at the end of his season, which is likely to be this weekend, to join the Knights, and has spoken with extraordinary candor about his current club on the Marshie’s Corner podcast.

The Broncos five-eighth revealed fellow halves Reynolds is the “certificate” of Brisbane’s attack and who they turn to for advice.

Gamble had high praise for Walters’ enthusiasm when he spoke on the podcast three weeks ago, but suggested Reynolds is running the show in Brisbane.

“Kev is the coach, but Reyno is the go-to guy. If you have any questions about the team or football, you go to him,” Gamble said.

“Not a knock on Kev, but ‘Reyno’ has been around for so long.

“Kevvie really understands football and he’s a good guy when it comes to lifting the team, but today is very different to the way Kevvie used to play football.

“There are some similarities with how you have to be with the attitude and those things, but Reyno is the brains of our offense right now.”

Gamble has played just eight games this season but has been recalled by Walters for their must-win clash against the Dragons on Saturday night.

The Broncos have been in the top eight since Round 9 and were fourth on the ladder as recently as Round 19.

But they have lost four out of five since then and capitulations against the Storm and Eels over the past fortnight have allowed the Raiders to take their place in the top eight.

To play in the finals, Brisbane must beat the Dragons on Saturday and wait for Canberra to lose to the bottom-placed Wests Tigers on Sunday.

The Broncos can still sneak in if the Raiders win, but they would have to beat the Dragons to close the 43-point lead the Green Machine has in the differential.

The situation has seen Brisbane officials put Walters’ contract extension talks on ice and Gamble’s comments will only put more pressure on the coach.

Gamble emphasized that he had no personal issues with Walters and even praised his approach to coaching, which allows players and assistant coaches to have a lot of input.

“We have a lot of assistant coaches taking over,” Gamble said.

“I’m not saying Kevvie takes a step back, but he knows what to say and when to say it and when to get involved.

“This year it worked well. He’s allowed us to do what we want to do, but when he’s gone too far, he’s reigned us in and told us to keep our heads down and stick to the basics.

“Kevvie has done well considering where we were last year.

“It’s made us a team again.”
