Sacked Wallabies star Israel Folau named to Tongan rugby team along with former All Blacks

The controversial former Wallaby Israel Folau and former All Blacks Malakai Fekitoa and Salesi (Charles) Piutau have all been named to Tonga’s national rugby team for the first time.

Former internationals have strengthened Ikale Tahi thanks to a recent change in World Rugby eligibility rules.

Folau had his Rugby Australia contract terminated in 2019 due to a series of homophobic posts on social media, but has previously expressed his desire to represent Tonga.

Fekitoa played 24 games for the All Blacks between 2014 and 2017 before moving to the Northern Hemisphere to play Toulon, then Wasps and now Munster.

Piutau played 17 games for the All Blacks before turning his back on New Zealand rugby at just 23 years old.

Folau was a teen prodigy in the NRL who played for Melbourne Storm, Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Australia before making his second dramatic code change to play for the Waratahs in 2013. He turned to rugby union after a brief stint in the AFL, playing the Greater Western Sydney Giants in their early years.
