Great footballer David King called St Kilda’s game plan “fraudulent”, called it “selfish players” and called the Saints “sub-AFL standard” when the club fell to a 28-point defeat to Westerners. Bulldogs Friday night.
A huge hype surrounded St Kilda in the middle of their streak of five straight wins at the start of the season, but Brett Ratten’s men remain out of the top eight after losing by 13.6 (84) to 7.14 ( 56) against the Bulldogs at Docklands Stadium.
It makes for a sad read for St Kilda fans, as the Saints have been pursuing their first post as prime minister since 1966.

“I’m sick of talking about this,” King said on the cover of the Fox Footy half.
“Structurally they allow things to go on. It’s a fraudulent game plan.
“I’ve been saying this for 18 months: when it works, it works really well, and it works really well for the same selfish players who want to advance the ball. They don’t want to be in front and fit in the hot spot. To be the first layer of pressure if you do not win possession, they want to be the guy who is first in goal.
“I don’t know what they reward St Kilda, but it’s not pressure.”
The bomb of friends worries the future
The Saints were fourth in the standings in the farewell, but have lost five of their last six games to fall to 10th place.
In an unfortunate early show, St Kilda did not score their first goal until the middle of the second quarter.
At the time, the Bulldogs had seven on the board and the game was almost over.
St Kilda icon Leigh Montagna said it was the Saints ’worst performance of the year.
“They haven’t fired a single shot. They don’t compete at the level St Kilda needs to win football games,” Montagna said.
“The pressure was the No. 1 they had focused more on trying to get their game on track, but it has left them.
“If their bad attitude has led them to their bad method … they are lacking in confidence. It has collapsed for St Kilda.”
