Let’s start with the mass shooting at a Texas school

Here’s what you need to know:

  • A gunman has killed at least 19 children and two adults in an attack on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in the southern United States.
  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott named the gunman as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos. He died during the incident
  • Authorities did not disclose the motive for the shooting
  • It was the deadliest shooting at a U.S. elementary school since 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook in Connecticut nearly a decade ago.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden vows to act on the country’s gun laws, saying now is “the time to turn that pain into action.”

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, a former representative of a district that included Sandy Hook Elementary School, has called on his colleagues to pass gun control legislation. The video of his passionate speech has been seen all over the world.

  • More than 1.5 million Australians will soon be eligible for a fourth dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. From 30 May, eligibility for another vaccine will be extended to people with cancer, other complex health conditions and Australians living with a disability. A fourth dose is currently available for people over the age of 65, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over the age of 50, and people with severe immunosuppression. Healthy people aged 16 to 64 who do not fall into these categories are not recommended to receive a fourth dose at this stage.
  • Australia’s new treasurer, Jim Chalmers, has clarified that the Labor government will formally defend low-wage workers for a pay rise. It comes when the Fair Work Commission reviews the minimum wage and the cost of living continues to rise. However, Dr Chalmers did not say when the government planned to present its presentation to the commission
