Buckingham Palace published a new photograph of the queen to mark her platinum jubilee
Huge crowds gathered in central London with a bright sunny Thursday for the start of four days of public events to mark the historic platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, in what could be the last major event public of his long reign.
From early in the morning, a steady stream of people, many with Union flags and picnic baskets, headed to the mall near Buckingham Palace, where the 96-year-old monarch will make two appearances later.
Ambulance service worker Gilbert Falconer, 65, traveled from Scotland to witness the event, which is being held to commemorate the Queen’s official birthday.
“This is very significant,” added another spectator, Daniel Marmah.

He has had to drastically reduce his public appearances since last year due to difficulty standing and walking, and a Covid attack.
The centennial ceremony has previously seen the queen take the salute on horseback.
Charles’ youngest son, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan, on a rare visit from California, confirmed Buckingham Palace, who will join the royal family to see the show of military precision.
He will return to the balcony later
In the evening, the Queen will be at Windsor Castle, west London, to take part in a ceremony to light more than 3,000 beacons across the country and the Commonwealth of 54 nations she heads.
Elizabeth was a 25-year-old princess when she succeeded her father, King George VI, in 1952, bringing a rare touch of glamor to a battered nation that still endured food rations after World War II.
Britain’s first and most likely Platinum Jubilee will see street parties, pop concerts and parades through Sunday.
He could still make a final appearance, again from the balcony of the palace, on Sunday, in the climax of a large public event in which 6,000 artists participate.
“I know a lot of happy memories will be created on these festive occasions,” he said.

Harry, 37, and Meghan, 40, caused shock waves in early 2020 when they moved to North America, from where they have publicly criticized royal life.
Since then, he has struggled with his health and also with the consequences of Andrew’s links to convicted sex offenders Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
Attention is increasingly focused on succession, and the future of the monarchy at home and in the other 14 Commonwealth countries where the queen is also head of state.
