The most powerful wind turbine in the world will make its debut in Scotland Guides

Spanish-German wind giant Siemens Gamesa has been awarded a firm order for 60 of its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, which will be installed at Moray West’s 882 MW offshore wind farm in Scotland. It will be the first installation of the most powerful wind turbine in the world, with a capacity of 14.7 megawatts (MW).

Also included is a service agreement to order the offshore wind farm, which will be located at the Moray Firth in Scotland.

The 180 Siemens Gamesa B108 integral blades, i.e. 60 turbines x 3 blades 108 meters long each, will be produced at the company’s offshore blade factory in Hull, England. Each SG 14-222 DD marine wind turbine will have a rotor diameter of 222 meters.

To get an idea of the size of the wind turbine, check out the prototype of the SG 14-222 DD in this short video:

A rapid deployment schedule aims to install the first machines in 2024, and the first power is expected to occur in 2024.

As reported by Electrek in December 2021, the prototype marine wind turbine of the SG 14-222 DD produced its first electricity and delivered it to the grid at the testing center in Østerild, Denmark.

Siemens Gamesa’s 14.7 MW turbines are unlikely to have the title of “most powerful” for long. In February 2021, as reported by Electrek, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas announced the launch of its new offshore wind turbine: the V236-15.0MW. On June 7, Vestas announced that it had reached a conditional order agreement to supply 64 V235-15.0 MW wind turbines for the 900 MW He Dreiht EnBW offshore wind farm in Germany by 2025.
