The Steelers name Omar Khan the next general manager when the team enters the post-Ben Roethlisberger era

Omar Khan, vice president of football and business administration for the Steelers, has been named the team’s next general manager, replacing Kevin Colbert, who is stepping down after about 22 years of success.

Khan was one of six candidates the Steelers accepted for second interviews. The other five were the Steelers’ professional exploration coordinator Brandon Hunt, the Titans players’ vice president of staff, Ryan Cowden, the Buccaneers’ vice president of personnel, John Spytek, the former Bills and Steelers director Doug Whaley, and Eagles player vice president Andy Weidl. According to Aditi Kinkhabwala, Weidl is expected to be appointed as the new assistant general manager of the Steelers.

Khan, 44, has been with the Steelers since 2001 after joining the NFL with the Saints in 1997. He initially served as coordinator of the Pittsburgh Football Administration before being elected managing director of Pittsburgh. football in 2011. Khan was promoted to his recent position as Vice President of Football and Business Administration in 2016. The Steelers have won two Super Bowls and three AFC titles during Khan’s 21 years with the franchise.

Khan will follow in the footsteps of a legend in Colbert, who helped build lists that won two Super Bowls, three AFC championships and 10 division titles. The Steelers reached the playoffs 14 times in Colbert’s 22 years in Pittsburgh. They only had one losing season, as their streak of 18 straight unbeaten seasons is the longest in the NFL.

The Steelers are coming off a 2021 season that saw them reach the playoffs after compiling a 9-7-1 regular season record. Pittsburgh’s low season has included the signing of free agent Mitchell Trubisky and the selection of former Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall selection. The two quarterbacks will compete with Mason Rudolph to be the team’s Week 1 starter.
