“Put Your Manners Back”: Tom Cruise’s terribly tense clash with Nine presenter Peter Overton is circulating again.
The unbearably awkward moment when Tom Cruise scolded veteran Nine journalist Peter Overton and told him to “return your habits” during a 60-minute interview is going around again.
Although 17 years have passed since it first aired in Australia, the infamous clip was tweeted on Friday by LA user @responsiblerob and has since attracted 2.2 million views.
As many Australians will recall, in 2005 Overton sat down for an interview with the Hollywood star, but his conversation took an awkward turn when he addressed the issue of his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, of whom Cruise s ‘had separated four years earlier.
“Nicole is the love of your life?” asked the Australian journalist, provoking a strong reaction from Cruise.
“What do you mean, Peter? Listen, we raise children, you know … I mean, how do you answer that question?” he fired.
When Overton pressed harder and asked what kind of relationship the couple had after their divorce, Cruise broke up.
“You’re crossing the line now. You’re crossing the line and you know you are,” he replied, looking at Overton.
The reporter argued that these were questions that “people want to know,” and that Cruise ruined them.
“Pere. Pere. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know. I’m just telling you right now, okay, put your habits back on track. “
“Do you think he was offline?” asked a puzzled Overton, and Cruise simply replied, “Yes, absolutely.”
“Well, I sincerely apologize for that,” the Nine presenter told him.
Overton addressed the infamous interview with Kyle and Jackie O program in 2020, insisting it had “no ill will” towards Cruise, despite its awkward exchange.
“What were you thinking then? When does Tom Cruise sink you in front of the camera? Are you thinking for yourself, how do I look respectful, but I also take care of the interview? asked host Kyle Sandilands.
Overton replied, “I just stayed who I am and I didn’t get angry. He did. And I stayed true to myself and said it was a fair question. I have no ill will towards Tom. It was a of those moments “.
