After 40 years in the film industry, Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise has become the highest grossing film of his career.
Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to the hit film Cruise’s Top Gun of 1986 and suffered several delays after it was originally scheduled for release in 2019.
At the international box office, the film went on sale with $ 124 million, an even more impressive sum as the film is not played in the key territories of China and Russia.

In total, Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $ 248 million worldwide.
Locally, the sequel has performed well: it reached No. 1 at the Australian box office on opening weekend with a total four-day box office gross of $ 13.8 million and A $ 15.1 million of Australian dollars including previews.
The film is the largest release weekend of a Tom Cruise film in Australia, ahead of War of The Worlds (US $ 6.65 million) and Mission Impossible II (6.4 million Australian dollars).
The results also make Top Gun: Maverick the biggest opening of a Paramount Pictures Australia movie.
Experts had predicted that the film would be successful with the Memorial of the United States weekend helping to push the film to the limit. Nor did it help that the initial reviews of the film were stellar.
The Metacritic score for the film currently stands at 78. BBC, Empire, The Telegraph, Collider and Uproxx all gave it the perfect score.
It is currently 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 99 percent.
