As the unmistakable noise of a Lancaster bomber approached, the queen’s face lit up as she looked over her head in wonder.

In that moment of unbridled joy, one could not help but wonder if she was reflecting on the day, after sneaking out of Buckingham Palace disguised as her sister Margaret, she was partying as a teenager with a jubilant crowd on VE.

The scenes witnessed in central London today may have been reminiscent of a time when Britain really had something to celebrate.

Among the hundreds of thousands gathered outside Her Majesty’s house, there would not have been many who, unlike our monarch, have lived through a time like this.

But many were delighted with the opportunity to party, have hope, and spend time with their loved ones, new and old friends, after living through two years of a global pandemic.

While delighting in the moment, perhaps Her Majesty gave way to a fleeting thought that could be the song of the final swan in such a magical event, given the undoubted exhaustion that will be this celebration of the Platinum Jubilee.

If it has to be the last one, what more appropriate tribute to a woman who has given so much.
