Sniper Elite 5 is the latest chapter in Rebellion’s ongoing love story with the covert release of high-caliber rounds to the digital Nazis, and it looks like this time it’s hit the ropes. The new game was launched last week, and not only has it done well critically, but people are also investing money in it. In the UK physical games list, it has debuted at number one, but more interesting is the split between PlayStation and Xbox sales.
Of the physical sales of the sniper sandbox so far, 92% of the copies sold were the PS5 and PS4 versions. This means that only eight percent of the share went to the retail Xbox version. Now, obviously, there are some caveats to this. These graphs do not include digital sales data, which would certainly influence these percentages a bit. The other point to note is that Sniper Elite 5 was released in Game Pass, so many Xbox users will play the game by subscribing.
That being said, this is a pretty clear indication of a shift from direct game buying to a service-based future. It’s just an example, but at first glance, Game Pass seems to have had a big impact on physical sales here. Microsoft has said before that subscription actually increases sales, but that seems to prove otherwise. Obviously, we lack a lot of data to draw real conclusions, but it seems to us that the effects of Game Pass are really brilliant in this example.
Elsewhere, Horizon Forbidden West has dropped to second place, but has enjoyed a podium finish in recent weeks. Gran Turismo 7 has overtaken a few, now in fifth place, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga falls slightly in fourth. FIFA 22 continues its upward trajectory, from eighth to sixth.
