That’s all we have time for tonight. We will include some of Aloisi’s reflections in our party report, and in our analysis of tomorrow and Monday. Thank you for joining us, it has been a pleasure.
Risdon makes his captain’s speech.
“First of all, I would like to thank the guys from Paddy and City,” he begins. “We have had a tough competition all year and you have been a great team. We had some good battles. I’m sure we’ll see each other again next year. “
He is grateful to the Australian Professional League for his support throughout Covid-19, then to the sponsors and finally to the members and fans.
“It’s pretty amazing to see so many people for a club that’s only three years old. We have a lot of ambition in this club and we have just started. Thanks again guys. To all these people who are not here, to our families and partners and to the sacrifices you have made, we could not be here without you.
“And to everyone in the club, to all the background staff, to the coaching staff and to everyone upstairs. And finally to all my brothers down here. I love you all. You are legends.”
Melbourne City players made their way to the stage one by one. As they do so, a section of the Korean crowd “Shit, Sydney.” This is what happens when Melbourne rules the place.
Now it’s United’s turn to go on stage and pick up their medals.
The winner of the Joe Marston Medal is … Aleksandar Prijović! Want to see your goal again? Of course.
Scenes.
And this is what Prijovic said:
Here’s Jamie Young, who played with Aloisi at the Brisbane Roar and moved to Victoria out of season.
He told me, “We’re going to win this thing,” says Young. “He’s a winner. He’s done it as a player. I’m very happy for him. he can do what he does, and I’m very happy for him. “
Well deserved by Western United. They came to this match ready to start and did not fall for a moment, standing firm in defense and taking advantage of their opportunities when they arrived. This is really a moment for Aloisi, who was overlooked by many Australian clubs and almost moved abroad before United finally called. Many canceled this team, basically everyone except themselves.
Full time! Melbourne City 0-2 Western United
They did. Western United have won their first A-League men’s championship. In its third season. There is a lot of excitement in the early moments. Players fall to their knees. Others rush off the bench. Aloisi and Foxe hug.
90 + 4 minutes United fans are more than City fans for a mile. A real toilet seat is being raised above the active supports as Kisnorbo walks with a (compound) look of despair on his face.
90 + 3 min Nino Reis floats the ball forward. Leckie drops it. United defend as if their lives depended on it. They take him out of the game. The city is going again.
90 + 2 min Young makes another long kick. The city sends it in a way. United sends another. The city goes on the first route, understandable at this point. They take another shot. Young makes another save.
90 min. Young has the ball and throws his shot. Jamieson grabs him and pings him forward. The last touch is out of town. Just before the service, Aloisi made two more changes, eliminating Wales and Wenzel-Halls for Dylan Pierias and Rhys Bozinovski. Four minutes of rest.
87 min Priojivoc grabs a cheeky heel, rather a bit from the outside of his boot, just outside the City area. United want a third goal before that is out. The city clears its lines and returns to the middle line. Risdon and Tilio get caught up in a small fight before Nabbout gets another vision in goal.
84 minutes United are so close to this trophy toilet seat that they can barely touch it. Alois has silenced the words with his assistant, Hayden Foxe, and keeps his emotions under control. But not for long.
81 minutes Save! This is Young’s top drawer, which throws Galloway’s bullet over the bar. It’s been great this season, again.
79 min There is another substitution when Metcalfe says goodbye to 20-year-old Taras Gomulka. Some of the tension fades for a short time. Ten minutes left.
76 minutes The Tilio is like a bird in a box, fluttering and ready to explode at any moment. He is alive with everything around him. Skotadis wins the ball with confidence and Prijovic has a chance at the far post from City, but he is overwhelmed.
73 min Nuno Reis guides the ball to the right flank and sends it in the middle. United regain possession and play in transition. Pain tries to slide through a gap between his opponent and the low side line under a challenge.
70 minutes In the middle, this great final was, for all intents and purposes, a done deal. It is now on the balance sheet. If City scores early, anything can happen.
68 minutes into the game, Tilio was replaced by Griffiths. Leckie moves further in the middle. The reigning champions are advancing. Tilio throws the ball to Berenguer but his center is not what it should be and the team recycles before United clears up. Risdon has slipped a bit on the surface, but recovers in time to stop some of Tilio’s witchcraft.
63 minutes I’m not really sure how United didn’t give up then. There has been an alteration in the fabric of this contest. Another chance is asking as Lustica gives way to Jerry Skotadis.
61 minutes United have lost their jobs in the last 10 minutes or so. His counterparts are investigating. Go ahead and ask questions. This phase of attack looks promising. Leckie approaches the ball. A defender expels him but recovers. Maclaren wants the ball away but he won’t get it. City should score here, Young is off target and the goal is scored. They don’t.
58 min. City makes a pass from behind before hitting a long ball to the bottom line, where Nabbout tries to evoke something. He came out around a corner. The substitutes are warming up and the call seems imminent.
City were in the lead after 55 minutes when Metcalfe broke through on the left, upping the score for Jamieson to 0 – 5, much to the home crowd’s dismay. His header goes over the crossbar.
53 min. Nabbout, City’s main attacking midfielder in this game, is in possession of United’s third defender and cuts inside, shooting a shot from his left boot that Young goes to the ground to meet. Tilio is warming up. The last great final was excellent and he was able to offer the spark that City needed.
50 minutes City play with something resembling renewed vigor. Chasing a little harder, playing faster. Jamieson takes the corner. Prijovic and Dylan Wenzel-Halls are trying to clear their lines. They flee unharmed.
47 minutes We’re back! Western United began the proceedings and then relinquished possession shortly thereafter. Risdon is still on the field and seems to be holding up well and considering things. Galloway has been launched, as predicted. But Imai is at the head and center here as he practically jumps on Metcalfe’s shoulders. Beath thanks him for giving City a free kick.
I’m leaving you for a little break for a drink, but here’s the second goal in the meantime:
Kisnorbo might sound like a change or two. Scott Galloway seemed to be warming up.
Risdon has an update on his hip: “It’s okay, just a little bit. It looks like it’s getting better, I need to keep it warm … I’m doing everything I can to stay fit.”
Half time! Melbourne City 0-2 Western United
At this stage, the extension seems unlikely. City need a rethink during the break because United have a hand in the trophy. But here’s a question …
Where will Western United take their trophy if they win? Geelong? Danced? Tasmania? Western Australia? Where do you mean the West? #ALagueMenGF

45+ 1 min Referee Chris Beath whistles for a VAR check after a bit of beef (or defeat?) Between Jenkinson and Pain. The pain instigates him with a push, but then Jekinson reacts with what appears to be a headache. The scale of the headbands isn’t strong, but it’s definitely worth a look. The review is over and no action will be taken. Pain and Jekinson have a few drinks on their backs. Everything is fine.
With 43 minutes played, Wales’s Lustica almost extended the lead, but his shot from the left glanced off the top of the bar to fall behind the net. This would have sealed the title if it had been done. Meanwhile, at the other end, Nabbout is taking steps before slipping into United’s goal. No branding.
40 minutes There is a sky blue fight towards the United goal. They go through the middle and Maclaren tries to put himself in position, but suffers in the same way as his French teammate and seems to fail. Rostyn Griffiths tries a through ball, but Young is caught offside.
36 min Poor Berenguer is being ruled out of this match. I would tell my players to do the same if I were Alois. I guess the point is in part that for City’s leading league attack they are ineffective here. Most are footballers, and experienced in this, but United defend with grunts and courage.
Goal! Melbourne City 0-2 Western United
30 minutes Is that a goal? Pain sinks the ball into the area, but bounces in front of a City defender, then another, and ping-pong for a while before Priojovic puts it where he wants. But the flag has been raised. Repetitions show the Serb was in play at the time of Pain’s ball and there appear to be questions about the nature of the rebound. After the review, the decision will be upheld. This is a long way to the city now.
28 minutes Close! Connor Pain is on the move and Neil Kilkenny is looking for Prijovic, who is in the mouth of the goal and waiting, waiting, …
