Gerrit Cole saw clearly how fun Jameson Taillon’s perfect game was on Thursday and decided to take action.
Almost equaling his Yankee teammate, Cole went through 6.2 innings perfectly before finally being broken by a Jonathan Schoop single. Although he could not complete the deal, it was another excellent performance by a Yankee pitcher. Cole ended up making seven innings, putting nine out. While every perfect game offer is impressive, it sometimes seemed untouchable, hitting four bats in a row on two different occasions.
Unlike Taillon, Cole received more than enough help from the Yankees attack for his perfect offer. The nine starters had a great day on their own, as eight of the nine Yankees in the lineup recorded at least one hit, led by Aaron Judge, who recorded four. Almost everyone who played participated, and all of that resulted in a 13-0 dominant victory over the Tigers, the fourth straight victory.
After Cole went through the first two innings, the Yankees attack opened the scoring with a couple of homers in the third inning. Jose Trevino and Aaron Judge went deep, giving the Yankees early lead. Judge’s brought him to 20 for the season in only his 50th game of the year. He continues to be the MLB home run leader for several times.
One post later, New York added more. After two quick starts to start the fourth, Matt Carpenter kept the entry alive with a simple touch on the third baseline to beat the change. Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a double, putting two runners in goal position. Trevino came back and then recorded one of the weirdest hits you’ll ever see. Tigers center fielder Willi Castro misplayed a Trevino ball completely as he sailed over his head, allowing two scoring runs with Trevino coming in third in a triple, the first of his career. .
On the next batting play, Aaron Hicks took him home (and then was sent off trying to pull a single on a double).
Even after all that, the Yankees ’biggest offensive entry came in the fifth. Anthony Rizzo took action, hitting a three-run, 430-foot shot. Matt Carpenter added a two-run blast a couple of batters later, and suddenly the Yankees increased by double digits. After the Yankees reloaded the bags, the Tigers were unable to corner a DJ LeMahieu grounder, leading to two more runs. The dust settled with the Yankees who had secured a seventh place.
After Cole’s perfect play offer fell to seventh with Schoop’s single, the end of his outing was quick to follow. Although we could not see that it was carried out, we did see that a very beautiful story took its place. Manny Bañuelos was added to start the eighth, making his Yankee debut. A decade after being a great prospect and several years after injuries and struggles derailed his career, he finally found himself in a pile of striped Yankee Stadium.
After a goalless eighth inning, the Yankees made one more run for the road. Bañuelos then finished ninth, sealing the 13-0 victory on his return to the major leagues.
Between Cole’s perfect game clock, a wonderful story that debuted in the Bronx, and a blast of attack racing, it was a pretty flawless game from a Yankee perspective. They will aim to replicate it tomorrow afternoon, when Luis Severino faces Beau Brieske with the first pitch at 13:05 ET.
