One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a church in a Birmingham, Alabama suburb on Thursday night, police said. An unidentified suspect is in custody.
The Vestavia Hills police department said it received a call from an active shooter at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at approximately 6:22 p.m. local time.
At a news conference Thursday night, Vestavia Hills police captain Shane Ware said a total of three people were shot. One victim died and two more were being treated at a hospital, he said.
Ware did not provide a possible motive or details about the circumstances of the shooting, although he said police believe there are no further threats to the community. It was not known how the suspect was arrested.
The church had posted on its website that it was having a snack between 5pm and 7pm.
The FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service were among several federal and local agencies that assisted in the investigation.
