1 dead and 8 injured after a shooting at the Arizona Mall

A shooting at a mall in Phoenix, Arizona, left one dead and eight others injured Saturday morning.

According to police, two women victims are being treated for life-threatening injuries, while another died from serious injuries after the attack.

The injuries suffered by six other people in the shooting, including a teenager, are not life-threatening. All were taken to local hospitals.

Phoenix Police Department Sergeant. Andy Williams said during a press conference that a fight broke out during a “large gathering” of about 100 people at the mall and that it turned into a shootout, according to the video released by ABC15. Police have not arrested any suspects.

The shooting occurred after midnight north of the city, police said.

Law enforcement is conducting an investigation into the shooting based on surveillance videos and other information, and police say there is “a lot” of physical evidence to inspect.

“Change must happen now,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego (D) wrote in response to the shooting. “It looks like we can’t spend a day without another mass shooting.”

This follows a series of other shootings across the country, including at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last week and a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, last month.

Uvalde’s shooting at Robb Elementary School left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Following the massacre, the Texas state legislature formed committees of inquiry this week in both the House and Senate with the goal of preventing future shootings and strengthening school safety.

The alleged Buffalo shooter traveled to a predominantly black area and killed 10 people in a racially motivated attack.
