Ten Alberta people are behind bars and face 139 charges in connection with one of Canada’s largest fentanyl seizures, which includes the dismantling of a “superlaboratory” in Calgary, according to police.
The superlaboratory closed in July 2021, after Alberta law enforcement (ALERT) response teams said more than 31 kilograms of fentanyl and precursors were confiscated, along with 7,600 kilograms of chemicals. used in the production of fentanyl. “Isotonitazene, an illicit drug regulated by Schedule I of the Controlled Substances and Drugs Act, is a synthetic opioid that is believed to be more potent than fentanyl,” the press release said.
To date, the amount of isotonitazene seized as a result of the ALERT investigation is the largest seizure of this substance in North America.

Police said Project Essence covered all aspects of fentanyl production, from import to the accumulation and storage of raw equipment and chemicals, to production and eventual distribution.
