Police are investigating after a teenage girl was found dead after drowning Friday afternoon at a water park near Montreal.
The 14-year-old was found unconscious at the base of a waterslide in a man-made lake at the Super Aqua Club in Pointe-Calumet, Que., around 5 p.m., authorities said.
The teenager had been in the park with her family when she was lost, said Régie de police du Lac des Deux-Montagnes police.
“The young woman did not know how to swim,” said Jean-Philippe Labbé, a police inspector.
“Never swim alone, that’s the main message we want to drive home.”
Rescuers tried to revive the girl before she was taken to a hospital in Saint-Eustache. She was then rushed to Sainte-Justine Children’s Hospital in Montreal, where she was later pronounced dead.
The death is being ruled accidental, police said, with a Quebec coroner’s investigation pending.
On its Facebook page, the Super Aqua Club expressed its condolences to the girl’s family, saying the team is in shock and mourning.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends. We want to express our deepest condolences,” he wrote Saturday morning.
The rest of the weekend will remain closed.
