MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – An 18-year-old man died Friday after Madison Police Department officers found him in a stolen vehicle with a gunshot wound.

The teenager’s name has not been released. MPD Capt. Kelly Donahue said the police department is still in the process of notifying his family.

Officers discovered the teenager around 11:20 a.m. when they responded to the area near the intersection of Vahlen St. and N. Sherman Ave.. Despite efforts to save his life, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

At about the same time the victim was located, MPD officers were alerted to a gunshot on Vera Court, about two miles away. The location where police found the victim was a few blocks from the southeast corner of Warner Park, while this second incident happened not far from its northwest boundary.

During a press conference held about three hours later, Donahue said investigators have not determined where the victim was shot. He described the investigation as still very active.

Nor have they found a motive for the shooting; however, Donahue indicated that the teenager was likely the target. No arrests have been made, he added.

The area near Vahlen Street is currently closed for the investigation and the police department expects to remain closed until Friday evening.

Helmets were found at two locations and a stolen vehicle was located and the 18-year-old was found dead at the scene.
