2 BC RCMP officers face criminal charges after separate guard incidents

The British Columbia prosecutor’s office on Thursday approved criminal charges against two RCMP officers, arising from separate and unrelated incidents almost a year ago.

The service announced that a Langley RCMP officer has been charged with breach of trust and threats. Hours earlier, he said he also approved an assault charge against a Surrey RCMP officer in a separate incident, which allegedly happened a month earlier.

The BC Prosecutor’s Office (BCPS) could not be contacted for an interview, but said in a statement that the charges “were approved by an experienced Crown attorney with no prior or current connection” with either. agents.

Langley RCMP Const. Patrick Sean Malone’s threats and breach of trust charges related to an alleged incident on July 6. He will appear in court on June 30.

A conviction for either charge can carry up to five years in prison, according to the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, a charge of assault was filed which caused bodily harm against Surrey RCMP Const. Jagjeet Bassan related to a guard incident on June 4, 2021. Bassan’s first court appearance is scheduled for July 6.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

The service said the two officers were sworn in on Thursday.
