With the U.S. Open about to crown a national championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, for the first time since 1988, the action intensified en masse over the weekend with a thunderous conclusion on Sunday. The first 54 holes saw several stars move up in the standings with Scottie Scheffler and Matthew Fitzpatrick facing off halfway through the final round while Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and others tried to make one last effort.
Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris had a one-off advantage on the field after three rounds, and Zalatoris is looking to achieve on Sunday what he could not do in the PGA Championship: close out his first major race. Fitzpatrick, who won a fan crown at The Country Club, hopes the familiarity will give him enough momentum to pick up his first major.
Meanwhile, defending champion Rahm was deflected by a shot and aimed to get two back. Scheffler is striving to join the enriched status as one of just over a handful of men who won the U.S. Masters and Open in the same year. As for McIlroy, well, he’s been playing his best golf in years and he’s been trying to win his first major since 2014.
Even beyond these golfers, there is so much to follow on Sunday that it can sometimes be overwhelming. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
