With the big names at the top of the board in Canada, it would never be my week there. Rory McIlroy ended up defending his title as a favorite.
We will now turn to the third big of the year: the US Open.
As with many of the older ones, most of my bets are made quite early in the year. Then I just hope the form stays the same and the injury error stays away.
But we’ll take a fresh look at the odds this week and see which players still have some value.
The course
The Brookline Country Club is expected to offer a tough test, as is the norm with the USGA. He’s expected to play more than 7,200 yards for a Par 70. He’s a little shorter than some of the giants we’ve seen in the past for this event, which could keep the guys without the ability to throw him off the tee in game this week.
Dirty is expected to be the main defense this week, along with the little greens, so it’s likely not just a direct bomb and gouge event, as we’ve seen a few times in the past. Definitely, the players will have to be in control both from the tee and with the irons.
It’s not a course we’ve seen often. It has not held the U.S. Open since 1988.
Most recently, the 2013 U.S. Amateur was held here and was won by Matthew Fitzpatrick. Corey Conners reached the semifinals that week and Scottie Scheffler advanced to the quarterfinals. Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau also played well enough to advance out of the batting game and win a game.
The Favorites
Four names have been separated from the package at the top of the dashboard. McIlroy will be the favorite (+1000) after his victory last week. He has been in the top 10 in four of his five Masters events, finishing no worse than 18th.
Justin Thomas is right behind him at +1200. Thomas lost the cut after his PGA victory, but has been in the top five twice since early May.
Jon Rahm and Scheffler close this level above +1400.
We haven’t seen much Rahm recently. He hasn’t played in a row in weeks since March. He got the win in Mexico, but his game only seems a little flawed at times, which has prevented him from adding one or two more wins this year.
Everyone knows what Scheffler has been doing this season. However, he has looked deadly since his Masters victory, actually only fighting once in his last five starts, including his playoff defeat at Colonial.
But having said that, he has still been in the top 20 in four of those five events, with a cut lost to the PGA in the poor final of a weather draw.
We see a large group of players forming the 2000s, such as Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Cameron Smith, Fitzpatrick, Patrick Cantlay and Collin Morikawa.
Smith and Fitzpatrick were added earlier this year, and I really wouldn’t like to fall into that range now.
Of the group, Cantlay catches my eye the most. It is available at +2500 virtually everywhere. I don’t know how popular it will be since it burned so many people in the PGA, but in addition to this lost cut, it has finished in the top three in its last three outings.
The number +2500 is available quite widely, so you can be patient and see if it moves later in the week.
The average level
I will focus here on three players: Max Homa, Sungjae Im and Daniel Berger. All three are likely to be popular works, so I doubt there will be much drift during the week.
Homa was mentioned in our first click post. It just keeps getting solid results. It is still available at +5000 on BetMGM. He has the full game to succeed here, and his game has also been improving to seniors, marked by a 13th last month at the PGA.
Berger is also another one I like at +5000. He comes in fifth at the Memorial, so his game is going in the right direction.
He has also had some success with previous USGA configurations, finishing in the top 10 twice at the US Open.
Berger is a guy I tend to shy away from when he gets over it, but I don’t think he’s one of those elders.
I’m the last one here at +4000, and he was a guy I played with a much bigger number a few months ago. It’s still not bad at all in that range. He’s been in the top 25 in his last five starts, and his ball hit has really been what has taken him over the last few weeks.
The Longshots
This really isn’t an event to go too deep for a winner. We would have to go back more than a decade to Lucas Glover in 2009 to find a three-digit player for the week. The cream usually goes up here.
If you want to delve into some of the top 20 or 40 type plays, I’d look at a couple of guys playing on the Korn Ferry Tour. MJ Daffue and Taylor Montgomery got the rankings and have done enough this season to block the PGA TOUR cards in the fall. Its shape is solid.
Montgomery made the cut last year and also finished 57th. Name recognition is not there and you will probably find solid prices there, but both have been playing golf very well for the past few months. Making a cut and having a decent weekend is possible for both of you.
