3 men missing after jumping into Sacramento County river to save a child

Rescue teams began a search on Sunday for three adult men who reportedly disappeared into a body of water in California after jumping to try to help an 8-year-old boy who was struggling in the water, according to the officials.

The men disappeared near the Three Mile Slough Bridge in Sacramento County. The family at the scene told KCRA that a group of men and children were camping overnight in the state recreational area on Brannan Island.

Five men jumped to help the boy, but three of them never returned to shore.

“This happened so fast, three people, my friends … and we come here all the time,” Juan Cabrera told KCRA. According to the local station, the three men were identified by the family as Edwin Rivas, Edwin Pérez and Danilo Solorzano.

The Rio Vista Fire Department said Sunday in a post on social media that the child was rescued and did not need any medical attention.

Officials said the currents are extreme in the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta system.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the mission went from a search to a recovery Sunday evening after officials failed to locate the three missing men.

“Deputies searched the waterways with negative results,” the sergeant said. Rod Grassman said, according to KCRA. “After exhausting all search efforts, MPs shifted their focus towards recovery.”

The Coast Guard has been called in to assist in the recovery mission.
