More than 400,000 umbrellas have been sold to retailer Costco due to a malfunction that could cause them to burst into flames.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall announcement this week after six reported incidents of product malfunction.
An incident sent a person to a hospital with a smoke inhalation problem.

“The company has received six reports of overheating of lithium-ion batteries,” the commission wrote. “This includes three reports of solar panels that caught fire while charging using the AC adapter inside and two reports of umbrellas that caught fire when the solar panel disk overheated and caught fire while was connected to the umbrella and a smoke inhalation injury “.

The CPSC urged umbrella owners to stop using them immediately.

“Consumers should stop using umbrellas immediately, remove the disc from the solar panel containing a lithium-ion battery from the top of the umbrella, store the disc out of the sun and away from combustible materials and not charge the disk with the AC adapter. “
Consumers can return umbrellas to any Costco Warehouse location to receive a full refund. People who are unable to return the product can contact Costco for guidance on how to receive a refund.

Separately, Costco drops an advantage that New Jersey residents have enjoyed exclusively for years.

Starting in July, Costco will require partner cards from customers who want to fill up their gas tanks.
“As of July 5, 2022, your active Costco membership card will be required for gasoline purchases,” the store announced this week.
To date, Costco’s locations in New Jersey have been unique for its open lines and lack of membership requirements to fill a vehicle.
