Tottenham have yet to reach an agreement with Ajax over a sale of Steven Bergwijn due to Daniel Levy’s differing views on Fabio Paratici.
Bergwijn has enjoyed some highlights at the Spurs, but now it looks like he will return to his native Holland. After just two and a half years in north London, the former PSV Eindhoven man is considering leaving for Ajax.
Talks between the two clubs have been going on for a few weeks.
Monday’s reports later stated that both sides were about to conclude discussions on the transfer.
Ajax have reportedly agreed to pay Tottenham € 30 million (£ 26 million) for Bergwijn, in a deal largely led alongside the Spurs by football director Paratici.
But while the two sides have a broad “agreement,” De Telegraaf’s latest update is that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has stepped in to try to reach a better deal.
In fact, the report states that President Levy, known for his shrewd business leader, is looking at the “secondary conditions” of the Bergwijn deal that Paratici has agreed with Ajax.
Levy wants better conditions on this side of the transfer, usually related to bonuses, add-ons and sale clauses.
It is now up to Levy to speak with Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar to try to fix the final details of the Bergwijn transfer.
Bergwijn immediately impressed Tottenham under Jose Mourinho. He scored in his debut to help the Spurs beat Manchester City in the Premier League.
Since then, however, he has struggled to get a consistent role in the first team.
And with current boss Antonio Conte adding Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison to his attack, Bergwijn would fight even harder during the regular minutes if he stayed.
Steven Bergwijn needs a professional resurgence
Bergwijn has shown his talent throughout his relatively short career at Tottenham.
But it seems his time in north London is about to come to an end.
You will be able to find relative comfort by returning to the Netherlands. And a move to Ajax would see him try to make an impact in the Ajax era after Erik ten Hag.
Bergwijn is only 24 years old and therefore still has the best years ahead of him to rediscover his best form.
