With No. 158 overall pick, the Edmonton Oilers used their fifth-round pick to catch Brynas Jr. goalkeeper Samuel Jonsson. of the Swedish youth league.
With only their second pick in the NHL Incoming Draft, the Oilers sought to bolster their goalkeeper depth by selecting Samuel Jonsson of Brynas Jr. in 15th place overall. Listed at 6.4 ″ and 201 pounds, Jonsson is a huge human being between the tubes and while his statistics in the Swedish junior league (9-20-0) leave something to be desired, we all know how goalkeepers they can be voodoo. to say the least and it will take some time to see how right or wrong the explorers were. A long-term project, no doubt, the Oilers will give Jonsson plenty of time to continue working on his craft before considering a move to take him to North America. In 2022-23, Jonsson could make the leap to Sweden’s top league where he would face tougher competition and possibly give us a better idea of what kind of player he can be.
Since the Oilers are incredibly shallow in goalie prospects, I wasn’t at all surprised to see them catch a goalkeeper with one of their subsequent round picks. We all know that goalie prospects take years to reach the NHL level, if ever, and while a 3.25 GAA and a 0.833% savings aren’t the prettiest numbers you’ll ever see, it’s clear that the Oilers scouts saw something in the player that has made this selection worthwhile. What did they see? Only time will tell. Even gathering this article turned out to be difficult, as there is not much about Jonsson listed on the Internet, and while exploration reports do not always give a complete picture, the lack of information about our new goalkeeper friend has turned him into a man of international mystery.
In 31 games played with the Brynas Jr., Jonsson recorded a 9-20-0 record that was accompanied by a GAA of 3.25 and a saving of 0.883%.
