Liverpool did not do very badly in their narrow defeat in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, with good margins that did not fall, but Ibrahima Konate was excellent.
The Reds lost 1-0 in Paris on Saturday night, with Vinicius Jr.’s goal in the second half winning the break in Paris.
Here we compare our player ratings with those of Liverpool Echo, Independent, WhoScored, FotMob and TIA readers.
Konate (8.2) was easily Liverpool’s best player of the night as he shone back in his hometown.
The 23-year-old was a colossal presence throughout the night, treated Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema with aplomb and showed great potential.
TIA’s Joanna Durkan praised Konate for being the “definition of calm and composure,” especially considering the magnitude of the game.
Dylan Terry, of the Independent, considered that “he justified more than his selection ahead of Joel Matip”, and also highlighted a “wonderful sliding entry to deny Vinicius”.
In second place, far behind, was Mohamed Salah (6.8), who tried in vain but was never the best all night.
Ian Doyle of the Echo noted that the Egyptian “took three excellent stops” from the inspired Thibaut Courtois, one of which came after a sublime first touch.
Virgil van Dijk (6.7) and Thiago (6.7) shared an equal third of the ratings, although neither will exactly love their respective projections as vintage.
In terms of lowest performance, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Luis Diaz (6.3) shared the lowest average grade.
He summed up how many players were out in Paris, in what was, understandably, a tired-looking performance of both the team and the individuals after covering the distance in each competition.
So for another season, it was a brave effort from Liverpool, but in the end, their 63rd game of a relentless season turned out to be a step too far.
