Violence erupts around Jerusalem during the controversial flag march

From the Damascus Gate, the main entrance to the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, a crowd waving Israeli flags danced and sang “the nation of Israel is alive” and “dead to the Arabs.”

Israeli police with riot gear blocked the surrounding streets, forcibly removing Palestinian protesters from the route.

Seventy-nine Palestinians were injured in Jerusalem by rubber bullets, grenades and pepper spray, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, and one protester was shot dead.

Twenty-eight people were evacuated to hospital after clashes with Israeli security forces and Israeli protesters, according to the agency.

At least 163 Palestinians were also injured in the West Bank. At least 11 of those injuries were caused by live bullets, according to the Red Crescent.

More than 50 people have been arrested and detained for participating in riots and assaults on police officers, Israeli police said in a statement on Sunday.

Five police officers were slightly injured in the various incidents and needed medical treatment, police also said. More than 2,000 police and volunteers had been deployed throughout Jerusalem.

The flag march is an annual parade where mostly nationalist Jewish groups celebrate that Israel took control of the Western Wall during the 1967 Six-Day War and captured East Jerusalem, placing the entire city under Israeli control.

The march has also been a hotbed with Palestinian residents of the Old Town in previous years.
