Lee Zeldin: A Republican congressman attacked on stage in a campaign speech

A man took the stage and appeared to try to “stab” a Republican congressman while giving a speech yesterday in his bid for governor of New York.

Lee Zeldin, 42, escaped unhurt after David Jakubonis, 43, approached him, shouting “you’re done” while holding a pointed weapon that looked like a push button.

Video footage posted on social media by witnesses showed Jakubonis reaching for the Republican candidate’s face or neck. Zeldin managed to fight off the attacker before both men fell to the ground as several others tried to subdue Jakubonis.

“I’m fine,” Zeldin said in a statement. “Fortunately, I was able to grab his wrist and hold him off for a few moments until others tackled him.”
