Big Brother will return to screens next year after a five-year hiatus after being revived by ITV, it has been confirmed.
The reality TV show aired for 18 years in the UK until it was axed in 2018. It will return in 2023 on ITV2 and new streaming platform ITVX, with its famous home sporting a “contemporary new look”.
The news was confirmed by a promotional video which aired during the series finale of Love Island on ITV2.
A cast of “carefully selected roommates from all walks of life” will live together for up to six weeks while the public watches via the house’s network of surveillance cameras.
Big Brother’s trademark live evictions will also return with public voting once again throughout the series, ultimately deciding the cash prize winner.
Paul Mortimer, Director of Acquisitions and Reality Commissions and Controller of ITV2, ITVBe and CITV, said: “This new, current and contemporary series of Big Brother will contain all the familiar format points that kept viewers engaged and entertained the first time, but with a whole new look and some extra twists that speak to today’s audience.”
It is unclear if the celebrity version will also return.
The show, which sees flatmates live together in a custom-made house for weeks with no access to the outside world in a bid to win a cash prize, started in 2000 on Channel 4 and Channel 5 took position in 2011. However, it was removed. by the station in 2018 amid a drop in ratings.
