The 25-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, suffered stab wounds and other injuries Monday after approaching a bison near a Black Sand Basin boardwalk, the park officials in a press release.
“As a result, the bison horned the woman and threw her 10 feet into the air,” the press release said.
The park’s emergency medical providers responded and the woman was taken by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, officials said.
“This is the first incident reported in 2022 of a visitor threatening a bison (getting too close to the animal) and the bison was responding to the threat by horning the individual,” officials said in a statement. of press. “Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. They are unpredictable and can run three times as fast as humans.”
Two more people were less than 25 feet from the same bison, according to the press release.
Park officials remind visitors to stay more than 25 meters from large animals such as bison, elk, sheep, deer, elk and coyotes, and at least 100 meters away from bears and wolves.
The incident is under investigation.
