TUI’s honeymoon crashed when a couple were stranded at East Midlands Airport by passport rule

A newlywed couple had their £ 2,000 TUI honeymoon ruined after her husband was banned from flying. A change of passport rule was the culprit when they approached the check-in desks at East Midlands Airport.

Christian Young, 49, and his wife Emily had planned to fly with TUI to Santorini. NottinghamshireLive reports that his hopes were dashed when Mr Young was told he could not fly. They had to leave East Midlands Airport.

Mr. Young’s passport expires in December 2022, but the date of issue was April 2012, which means it exceeds the 10-year term. He was excited: “A woman and a boy came to us and told me I couldn’t fly. They told us to leave the airport.” I didn’t know the rule.

He said: “Even though you know it, you can’t fly and that’s where the problem is. It can take up to 10 weeks to get a new passport, and that rule was introduced recently, almost overnight. There was no grace. I was told no to the apartment and then we were told to leave the airport. I am very disappointed: my wife has not been out for six years. “

Mr Young said: “There’s the financial side, but also the fact that I won’t be able to book any more free time this summer. I booked 10 days for that just to tell myself I can’t go.

“It’s ridiculous and disappointing. It completely ruined our honeymoon. It looks like it came out of the blue and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

A spokesman for tour operator TUI said: “We are sorry to hear from Mr Young’s experience and understand his disappointment that he was unable to go to his honeymoon as planned.

“As we informed you of any changes to the passport validity rules and reminded you to review your passport at the time of booking, and again upon confirmation of booking, our terms apply and “We have advised Mr Young to contact his traveler, and they have offered a gesture of goodwill if they cannot support him.”
