A well-known old Burton pub has caught fire today. Smoke rose from the old Dart Inn on Short Street, Stapenhill. A cordon was installed when firefighters tackled the blaze this Sunday afternoon, June 12th.
The town planning permit for the demolition of the old pub, which has been the target of vandals since it closed five years ago, has recently been granted. Problems even led to the current owners saying they regretted ever buying the property.
But last month, after more than a year of delays, East Staffordshire Borough Council approved a planning application to demolish the pub with 11 new houses to be built on site.
The short street was closed as teams faced the fire, with residents behind the cordon watching the drama unfold. Thick black smoke from the building was seen from across Burton.
