A whale tangled in a shark net off the Costa Daurada is free, after being untangled this morning before rescue teams intervened.
Rescue crews, including the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), had been preparing to help the animal trapped in the shark nets in the waters next to the Surfers Paradise tourist strip.
A Sea World Rescue spokesman said they received several calls about a tangled whale in the nets at Surfers Paradise shortly before 7 p.m.
Sea World said the whale, which was accompanied by a calf, was seen swimming north and leaving no residual net.
Fisheries Queensland will inspect the shark net for damage.
According to Queensland Fisheries, two humpback whales became entangled in teams last year, compared to four in 2020.
Earlier this month, Sea World released a humpback whale from the fishing gear in Coolangatta.
