A 10-year-old boy in a classroom in the hallway of the room where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, said the experience of hiding during the shooting was “terrifying.” .
Jayden Perez told Merella Fernandez of CTV News that when his class heard gunshots coming from the hallway, his teacher immediately closed his door and told them to hide and keep quiet.
“Five of us were hiding where we hung our backpacks, and the rest were hiding under a table,” he said, adding that he was scared.
“After a while the shots stopped. And then we heard gunshots again, and then they stopped completely.”
What they didn’t know at the time was that an 18-year-old had entered a Robb Elementary class and killed two teachers and 19 children, most of them the same age as Jayden.
He said his class could only get out of school when police broke the windows and allowed them to leave.
“It was a horrible experience,” he said. “Territor.”
He said he had met one of the children killed in the shooting.
“It’s a good drawer,” he said. “He liked to draw Pokémon and anime. He was very good.
“I’m sad that some of my friends didn’t make it.”
