A man convicted of drunk and dangerous driving who caused the death of an RCMP officer has been released again with the warning to stay away from drugs and alcohol and receive counseling.

Ken Fenton was convicted of colliding with Const. Sara Beckett’s cruise after passing a red light in April 2016 near Victoria and was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

Fenton’s release was suspended in April when he admitted he was over-medicated with prescription drugs in response to the accident’s anniversary anxiety.

The decision of the Board of Parole of Canada, issued on Tuesday, says a urine test also showed illegal drugs and their release was suspended.

He says Fenton has spent long periods of time in the community with no problems, has found a full-time job and has the support of a girlfriend and family members.

In reversing the suspension, the board says it is concerned that it may not be able to follow the rules of its prescription marijuana program and that negative feelings make it turn to alcohol, but as it is nearing the end of its sentence, access to support is essential so that it can be reinstated. in society.

Fenton told the board he felt he had come a long way since his conviction.

“You also wrote a letter to the board explaining how your alcohol addictions developed during adolescence and youth,” the decision says.

“You expressed remorse for the harm you have done to the victim and their family and say that success in parole and recovery from your addiction problems are your top priorities.”
