NEW YORK – Toronto Blue Jays batting coach Guillermo Martinez was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount after his heated argument with referee Doug Eddings ahead of Wednesday’s game.

The altercation occurred during the lineup’s exchange of cards before Toronto’s game in Chicago against the White Sox to close out a three-game series.

Martinez removed the card from the lineup, a task normally performed by coach Charlie Montoyo, and shook hands with the referees before arguing vigorously with Eddings. Martinez was sent off.

The MLB said Friday in a statement that Martinez was being sanctioned for unsportsmanlike conduct and for making contact with Eddings.

Eddings, who was assigned to third base for Wednesday’s game, was behind the plate for Toronto’s 7-6 loss to Chicago on Tuesday.

The suspension began when Toronto opened a three-game series with the Brewers Friday night in Milwaukee.
