Afghanistan suffered the deadliest earthquake in decades on Wednesday when a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit the east of the country, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring many more.
The quake occurred in the early hours of the morning near the city of Khost, on the border with Pakistan, and the death toll is expected to rise, as many of the houses in the area were built with materials vulnerable to damage. .
The humanitarian disaster comes at a difficult time for the Taliban-ruled country, currently in the midst of famine and economic crises.
