The story is being made with the US space agency NASA ready to launch a rocket into the skies east of Arnhem Land tonight.
It is the first time since 1995 that a rocket has taken off from Australian soil and the first time NASA has launched a commercial rocket.
The NASA rocket will take off from the red earth at the Arnhem Space Center, on the outskirts of Nhulunbuy, around 10:44 p.m., local time tonight.

Those on the ground and in the surrounding areas will be able to follow the rocket as it makes its way through the skies, a few seconds after takeoff until it leaves the Earth’s atmosphere.
The space center is privately owned and managed by Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA).
Tonight’s launch will be the first of three the center has scheduled with NASA over the next three weeks.
