(NEXSTAR) – Parents who have patiently waited to vaccinate their young children against COVID-19 can do so now. Coronavirus vaccines for children under 5 were approved by the FDA last weekend.
“The United States is now the first country in the world to offer safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months old,” President Joe Biden said Tuesday at the White House.
Although anyone six months or older is now eligible for vaccines, the administration warns that it expects the rate of vaccination of younger children to be slower than older ones, as parents are more likely to trust in their children’s pediatricians to administer them.
While the doctor’s office may be the first place many parents think of when trying to schedule an appointment, some retailers are also administering vaccinations. However, many pharmacies require children to be at least 3 years old.
Modern COVID-19 vaccinations are now an option for older children in the US
Parents and caregivers can choose between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as they make an appointment for the estimated 20 million children who are now eligible. The Modern vaccine is given in two doses, while the Pfizer vaccine is a three-dose series.
When it comes to making an appointment, visit vaccines.gov to find local providers or visit one of the following chains:
- Walgreens: Patients must be 3 years of age or older
- CVS: Currently only the Pfizer vaccine is available for children up to 18 months.
- Costco: Costco offers the vaccine to children 3 years of age or older.
- Rite Aid: Children from the age of 3 can receive the COVID vaccine.
- Kroger: Children ages 1 to 4 can be vaccinated at Kroger pharmacies.
- Wegmans – Wegmans, who says he is waiting for doses for children under 5, will give injections to patients 3 and older.
