The income supplement and the benefit for the elderly will increase by 10% from 5 July. (CBC)
The 10 percent increase in the income and benefit supplement for seniors announced last March will begin on July 5, the provincial government said in a press release on Tuesday.
People who receive the income supplement will now get up to $ 1,000 a year, while those who receive the benefit for seniors will receive up to $ 1,444 a year, according to the press release.
The change was announced in March as part of a series of measures aimed at the cost of living.
The provincial government says approximately 162,000 Newfoundland and Labrador residents and families receive the income supplement, while more than 50,000 seniors receive the benefit for seniors.
Eligibility for benefits is based on the net family income from the previous year’s return and no application is required.
The Newfoundland and Labrador health agreement, the ten-year plan for the province’s health care system, recommended indexing the income supplement and the elderly’s benefit to inflation, but it is unclear whether the provincial government plans to implement this recommendation.
