A baby with difficulty breathing dies after being transferred from Montreal Hospital

The coroner’s office is investigating after an eight-month-old baby with difficulty breathing died after being transferred from Montreal General Hospital.

Police took the baby to the hospital after officers were the first to arrive at the scene Wednesday morning after receiving a 911 call.

“When the police officer arrived at the scene, he noticed that the baby was unfortunately not breathing, and this information was taken to a call center,” said Chantal Comeau, a spokeswoman for the Emergency Department. -Health. “Immediately, our response plan was adjusted.”

Urgències-Santé says that based on the information from the person who called 911, the answer only deserved a level three priority: a response time of 20 to 29 minutes.

But when police transmitted the severity of the baby’s distress, that priority was raised and police decided not to wait for paramedics.

“The rescuers were there in about two or three minutes. By the time they got there, the police officer had already gone to the hospital with the baby,” Comeau said.

At the hospital, teams of doctors, nurses and respirators worked with her for about 30 minutes, said MUHC Associate Communications Director Andrea Paine.

“As soon as the baby arrived at the hospital, a whole team of professionals started working with the patient right away,” Paine said. “Whoever was available at the time started working on the baby.”

The doctors then decided to take her to a pediatric center. He died on the way.

Paine said there were details that the hospital was unable to release due to patient confidentiality.

“Since the decision is related to the minor’s medical case, no further details or details can be disclosed to preserve patient confidentiality and out of respect for the family,” the hospital said in a statement.

Note: An earlier version of this article suggested that the baby was rejected by Montreal General Hospital. The hospital later clarified that the nurses and doctors did their best to save the baby’s life before transferring him to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The current article reflects this information.
