A campfire ban goes into effect at Kamloops Fire Station at noon on Thursday, August 4, 2022.

A campfire ban will go into effect Thursday at 12:00 noon (noon) across the entire Kamloops Fire Center as hot, dry weather increases fire danger.

These are the activities that will be prohibited:

  • Bonfires as defined in the Forest Fire Regulations;
  • Category 2 open fire as defined in the Forest Fire Regulations;
  • Category 3 open fire as defined in the Forest Fire Regulations;
  • fireworks;
  • Sky lanterns;
  • Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description;
  • Binary Explosive Targets;
  • Tiki and similar types of torches; and,
  • Fireplaces, outdoor stoves, and other portable campfire devices not listed by CSA or ULC.

The ban will remain in place until October 15 or until the orders are lifted.

The Kamloops fire center fire danger rating has increased to high or extreme in most areas, and the region now has the most active wildfires in the province.

These prohibitions apply to all public and private lands within the jurisdiction of the Kamloops Fire Station, unless otherwise specified in an enactment (eg, a local government bylaw). Always check with local government authorities to see if there are any other burning restrictions.

If you’re caught with a fire in violation of the ban, you could face a $1,150 ticket, be asked to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, you could be fined up to $100,000 and/or convicted. to a year in prison. If the violation causes or contributes to a forest fire, the responsible person may be ordered to pay all extinguishing and associated costs.
