A crowded street becomes a crime scene when one man is killed and another is interrogated by murder squad detectives

There is no regular rush of traffic and shoppers this Saturday on Union Street in downtown Oldham. A police cordon runs along the stretch while a murder investigation begins.

A few meters from the cordon, there is a tram in the middle of the road while forensic specialists do their job. A man has lost his life; another detainee suspected of murder.

At around 4:20 a.m., officers were called to the street after reports of a man – believed to be in his 40s – had been stabbed. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

Detectives from the Greater Manchester Police Incident Team launched a murder investigation. A 30-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder.

People living nearby see the tranquility of the usually busy street. On Saturday night, hours before the horrific incident, taxis and cars filled the road as people ventured out for a bite to eat and a drink with friends.

A man living on Union Street said so Manchester Evening News: “ It’s awful over the weekend. Monday through Wednesday is fine, but starting Thursday, it’s just a mess. Last night the street was full of taxis and cars, there were people everywhere. I woke up and saw a cordon around my house, they said someone had been stabbed. ”

Initial investigations suggest the victim was stabbed after an altercation with a man near the Light of Bengal restaurant, according to police. A 30-year-old man was arrested. He was questioned by detectives Saturday night.

Another man said, “It’s very sad. Imagine going out and having fun with your classmates and then losing your life.”

One person who asked not to be named said: “Around 5 in the morning you see hundreds of people drinking, fighting, shouting. The police are here every two weeks.”

A member of a local church said: “One of the shops in the area decided to close because they were worried about their safety.”

Although formal identification has not yet been made, police believe the victim is a 40-year-old man from Oldham.

Specialist agents have informed the man’s family and are working to support him.

Detective Superintendent Simon Hurst said: “We have a dedicated team of detectives working to the beat after this deadly stabbing in the early hours of today, and we are doing our best to support the man’s family right now. horrible and make sure they get the justice they absolutely deserve.
