“Another mass of cold air is in sight in Australia and some areas could see even lower temperatures and more damaging winds over the next week,” Weatherzone said.

“Stronger winds from this system will occur between Saturday night and Monday, with possible damaging gusts in parts of SA, TAS, VIC, ACT, NSW and southern QLD.

“The wind should be lowered from Tuesday to Wednesday, although another frontal system could cause the winds to strengthen from Thursday and possibly extend over the weekend.”

Residents of three states are experiencing the early winter chill with minimum temperatures of between eight and 11 degrees expected this weekend.

“Temperatures will start to drop as the first front passes this weekend, before the colder air continues to spread across southern, central and eastern Australia for most of next week,” said Weatherzone.

Over the next 10 days, most of Australia will experience cooler-than-average temperatures for this time of year.

Weatherzone forecasts that Sydney will remain below 19 degrees during the first fortnight of winter, which has not occurred in more than 20 years.

Skiers and snowboarders are happy that the especially icy temperatures have made the snow resorts open earlier this weekend.

Up to 20 inches of snow is expected in NSW snowfields.

At Mount Buller in Victoria, Rhylla Morgan said there is already 45 inches of snow in the alpine area.

“Sometimes at this time of year we don’t have snow on the ground and these storms have just fallen in the mountains and there are more this weekend,” Morgan said.

“This kind of snowfall so soon is pretty extraordinary.”

Weatherzone warned that severe weather warnings are likely to be issued in several states this weekend.
