A “dangerous” and violent man jailed for the “scariest abuse campaign” a court has ever seen

A “dangerous” and violent man who carried out one of the worst abuse campaigns a court had ever seen has been jailed for 18 and a half years.

Michael Maughan, 27, raped her victim several times and threatened to take her to Epping Forest in Essex and kill her, police said.

The vulnerable young woman suffered episodes of severe violence in which he punched and punched her, beat her and threw her to the ground.

Maughan would also grab the keys to her car and prevent her from leaving.

He pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behavior, multiple rape charges, sexual assault, causing actual bodily harm and kidnapping and false imprisonment.

In April 2021, the couple was staying at hotels in Chiswick and Hammersmith in London when the woman was subjected to abuse and assault.

Maughan hit her with a chair and threw her a cough syrup, metropolitan police said, but she was too terrified of the repercussions if she dared to say she did not consent to sex.

Fearing for his life, he confided in a friend and reported himself to the police.

Detectives immediately began an investigation and tried to locate both Maughan and the woman.

She had been trying to hide from Maughan and was reported missing, with him also trying to find her.

In his efforts to locate her, he visited a beauty salon he knew he frequented in Edgware, where he launched a diatribe of abuse and threats against staff so serious that a longtime staff member resigned out of sheer fear. that he would return.

On May 5, 2021, officers went to an address on Effingham Road in Haringey, following information that Maughan was there.

He was arrested and police also discovered the victim, who had been detained against her will and was very distressed.

In his pre-sentencing summary, HHJ Kaul QC described his offense as a “campaign of the most appalling treatment many in this court may have seen.”

He also stated that he found Maughan dangerous, especially when it comes to sex with women.

He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before he can be considered on parole.
