After hearing evidence at trial, Ontario Court Judge JR Richardson described the sexual assault as painful and degrading.
The attack broke the woman’s life. She filed an impact statement of the victim detailing the depressing and life-altering effects of the attack that left her bleeding and in pain.
Beal was a corporal in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment at CFB Petawawa at the time he raped the woman.
He maintains his innocence and shows no remorse. Beal is on bail awaiting a appeal.
“She feels guilty for appearing and participating in the defendant’s liability. She acknowledges that this will have a profound effect on Mr. Beal’s life. The irony is that he feels guilty, but Mr. Beal doesn’t, no. you get lost with it, ”the judge said in a ruling last month.

Beal presented a lot of brilliant letters of support from colleagues, friends and family. One of his supervising officers described Beal as “one of the strongest corporals” under his command. Others expressed outrage over the guilty verdict and said it would be “out of character” for Beal to commit such a horrible crime.
The judge sentenced Beal to two years in prison.
Beal had no criminal record until the rape, and the court learned he was raised as a Christian by “good” parents who have been married for 40 years. Unlike so many sexual predators, Beal suffered no childhood trauma. Born in Sackville, NB, Beal moved to Alberta with his family when he was five years old. They lived in Peace River until he was 14, when they moved to Calgary.

After finishing high school, Beal went to the University of Calgary for a year. He left to work as a laborer in construction. He later enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at age 23 and had plans to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer. The judge noted that the dream had been broken.
Beal exploited the drunken woman who was unable to push him because of her size and weight, the judge summed up.
Beal’s messages to the victim the night in question showed intent to have sex with her regardless of his feelings against her, according to the court in Pembroke.
“When Beal arrived he knew that (she) just wanted to hang out and hug. She didn’t want sex. He hoped she would change her mind and have sex with her. He was going to ‘make a move.’ or ‘try your luck’ to get her to have sex with him, ”the judge recalled in his decision.
Beal did not use a condom in the rape. The court learned that he had transmitted chlamydia to a woman in the past.
In this case, the judge explained: “(The woman) suffered a deep internal cut in the vagina. This cut was painful and produced a lot of blood. She was still in great pain when the sexual assault nurse examined her 14 hours later. “
Prior to his conviction in June, Beal received two job offers: one as a carpentry apprentice in BC and the other as a framework assistant in Alberta.
Beal was successfully prosecuted by Ottawa Crown attorney Suzanne Schriek.
