A domestic dog in Kugaaruk has been slaughtered after killing a fox showing possible signs of rabies, the Department of Health said on Wednesday.
The department also reported that tests on a dog that died after being attacked by a fox in Whale Cove last month have tested positive.
“Because of the danger of rabies, we advise all residents to be on the lookout for foxes in the area,” spokesman Chris Puglia said in a press release.
He said anyone who has been bitten or scratched by a fox or dog should go to the local health center immediately and report the incident.
“Treatment should be started quickly after exposure, as rabies infections are almost always fatal,” Puglia said.
He said pets that spend time tied to the outdoors should be monitored for changes in behavior and possible signs of anger, such as strange behavior, staggering, foaming at the mouth, drowning. or make unusual noises.
Animals showing these signs should be avoided and reported to the regional environmental health office at 867-645-8071 or the conservation officer at 867-896-9189, Puglia said.
Residents who see foxes or wolves walking near communities should also contact the conservation officer, he said.
