A generational gap in the GOP on climate change

A new comprehensive Pew Research Center survey shows large age-related differences in Republican views on global warming.

Momentum in the news: Nearly half of Republicans (or “Republican-leaning” Republicans) between the ages of 18 and 29 say the federal government is doing too little on the issue. But as you can see above, this concern decreases quite a bit with age.

  • There are also generational divisions over policy, although carbon taxes and incentives for carbon capture have more unified support.
  • Our graph only shows the youngest and largest cohorts surveyed, but the full survey analyzed four age groups.

Note: the margin of error of the survey for match-specific age groups is greater than +/- 2.2% of the general match samples, but the results clearly show differences even with these uncertainties.

The big picture: 79% of Democrats and Democrats say President Biden’s climate policies are leading the country in the right direction, compared to 15% of the R and Lean-R camp.
